Carol Denniston
Ph.D., Registered Psychologist
Welcome! I’m Dr. Carol Denniston, but please call me Carol. I’m a Registered Psychologist (#1927) with the College of Psychologists of B.C. and have nearly 30 years of clinical experience working with clients from diverse backgrounds, helping them make meaningful changes in their lives. I use a compassionate and non-judgmental approach to therapy, and believe in creating a safe and supportive environment where clients can explore their thoughts, emotions, and behavior without fear of judgment or invalidation. With a focus on evidence-based treatments, I integrate a range of therapeutic modalities to address the unique needs of each individual. I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy-informed (DBT-informed therapy), Prolonged Exposure for PTSD, mindfulness, and self-compassion approaches. I currently work with adults of all ages, including seniors, who live in B.C. I provide services via telepsychology using a secure online videoconferencing platform.
About Me
Psychotherapy, Consultation, and Groups
I received my doctorate in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology-San Diego (APA accredited) in 1996. I have an extensive clinical background assessing and treating adolescents and adults with a wide range of psychological difficulties including, depression, anxiety, emotion dysregulation, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), disordered eating, substance abuse, self-harm, and suicidality. I have worked in inpatient, outpatient, and private practice settings. I have also provided clinical supervision to graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and clinicians in the process of becoming registered psychologists in B.C.
I completed a one-year fellowship at the DBT Centre of Vancouver, during which I received intensive training and supervision in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). I have 10 years of experience providing individual DBT and DBT group skills training to adolescents and adults, through my work at the DBT Centre of Vancouver. During this time, I also provided consultation to family members of those with borderline personality disorder and led DBT skills groups specifically for family and loved ones. In addition to DBT, I am also experienced in providing other evidence-based treatments including, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), DBT-informed therapy, and Prolonged Exposure (PE) for PTSD.
I have a supportive, validating, and collaborative approach to treatment. My interpersonal style is warm and non-judgmental. I encourage clients to both accept the present moment as it is and work towards change. I am currently working with clients who may benefit from CBT, DBT-informed therapy, prolonged exposure for PTSD, mindfulness or self-compassion approaches.
Please note that I no longer provide standard DBT or any component of comprehensive DBT, which is often the most appropriate treatment for individuals struggling with borderline personality disorder, suicidality, and self-harm.
I am a member of the American Psychological Association, The National Register for Health Service Psychologists, the Canadian Psychological Association, and the British Columbia Psychological Association.
